I Am An Immigrant

#IAmAnImmigrant and I LoveĀ

I was born in Nairobi, Kenya. In 1999 I obtained my green card and my family and I left everything behind and moved to the United States. We left friends, family, belongings, everything. We arrived on a cold day in the middle of winter at JFK in New York. Snow was falling outside.

My heart felt like ice.

I followed all the rules, I paid my taxes, I was a law-abiding citizen. And I became a U.S. citizen in 2008.

Over the years I’ve been called names, I’ve experienced racism, hatred, judgement. But I never met that hate with more hate. My parents raised me to give, and love, and respect. I only spread love.

I am an immigrant. I am an American. I am a woman. I am mixed race. And I work hard, give back, and spread love in all I do.
